Discovery and naming
Chlorine was discovered by Carl William Scheele, a Swedish chemist. He discovered that there was a greenish yellow gas when he used hydrochloric acid with mineral pyrolusite. Scheele was confused about his discovery. He believed that the gas was a compound of oxygen with a new element. A english chemist and physicist, Sir Humphry Davy suggested the name chlorine for the gas based on the Greek word chloros meaning greenish yellow.
